We had a wonderful experience at White Horse Tavern. The interior is absolutely stunning — historic, atmospheric, and beautifully preserved, creating a truly special dining setting. The service was impeccable: attentive, professional, and genuinely welcoming. And the duck was exceptional — perfectly prepared and full of flavor. I have never seen such an extensive wine list before. The selection is truly impressive and makes the experience even more memorable. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a refined and authentic dining experience in Newport.
Having over 350 years of history in this building as the oldest tavern and operating restaurant in the US (and 10th oldest in the world), there is no reason why someone obsessed with such things wouldn’t take a slight (or even large) detour to visit and partake in it. Perhaps, it would immediately make sense for those who loved strong spirits to visit and slowly sample through their extensive beverage list over a week (safely) or a lifetime (as a connoisseur). However, word is they have also made a slight culinary name for themselves in this part of the woods. For that latter part, I made it a point to make a reservation during this visit to Newport shortly after a lovely walk along the coast. It looked like just any other colonial style New England-ish building from the outside, which is
History and beautiful food. Service was great and answered all my questions about the history of the tavern, drinks were so good we had 2 each. The charcuterie was delicious, the Wellington was perfect, and my husband had the catch of the day which he said was the best fish he’s ever had and that man is not easy to please! The tavern candy bar was the best ending to a wonderful meal and experience.
It was good. I have not been to this restaurant in about 10 years. I had such fond memories of this place and was a little disappointed. I had the lobster ravioli and it was only OK. I felt the past was too thick and chewy and did not love the sauce. Our charcuterie appetizer was enjoyable along with the bread. My daughter order the steak frites and loved her meal. Our server was lovely. The ambiance of the restaurant is still as nice as I remembered. I guess, I just ordered the wrong meal. It was my birthday and the candle on the plate of my crem brûlée was a nice touch.
We loved our experience at White Horse, our waitress was fantastic. So accommodating and attentive. The food was spectacular, and the atmosphere was perfect for an intimate date night. The music wasn’t too loud, so we could actually have a conversation. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting a fancy dinner while in Newport.
