We’ve driven past The Pure & Proper countless times over the years, but we’d never tried it until last night. Our only regret is that we didn’t try it sooner. The old Pure Oil gas station has a nice quirky vibe to it. Every table was full, but we were easily able to have a conversation without having to raise our voices. Kristin took great care of us and co-owners Richard and Heidi King stopped by to make sure we were enjoying our dinner. The cheese board — 3 kinds of cheeses, olives, almonds, mustard, pickled vegetables, and toasted bread — was probably the best cheese board we’ve ever had. The portions were so generous that we ended up bringing some home. My wife had the Baby Kale Salad with butternut squash, roasted beets, and feta cheese, and a cup of Potato & Leek Soup, and she en

First impressions-they preserved a historical building that used to be one of the original and only fuel and service stations in Black Mountain. The greeting-the hostess was sweet and genuine. Shortly after we were seated our server was punctual on getting drinks out and knowledgeable about the specials and answered questions about the menu. I ordered an avocado toast and mom got a double cheeseburger. The food-I’ve never ordered avocado toast before and I didn’t know what to expect. This thing came with avocado, scrambled eggs, arugula, crispy fried onion, and something else with a nice crunch. Mom loved her cheeseburger. She’s in chemo so things taste weird to her but she enjoyed it and that was a win! Atmosphere-the place was fairly quiet as we arrived at an odd hour, 2:30-3:00. The Pur

We did the chef’s table experience which was a bar seat right up against the kitchen. This is not your typical “watch the chefs work” experience. It was much more casual than we expected in the best way possible. We were able to take recommendations and order directly with the chef. He explained some of his ideas behind the dishes and it was a really great experience. Now the food…absolutely to die for! The duck leg was the best I’ve ever had. In the south it’s really hard to find people that make vegetables really delicious and the mushrooms and brussel sprouts did not disappoint. We will absolutely return next time we’re in the area. My one recommendation would be that the restaurant put explanations for their different reservation types on open table.

I visited here in a group of 8 after we finished hiking nearby. We sat outside. We ordered around 2:25pm. I got the steak and eggs and my son got the French toast. I also ordered the lavender lemon drop. Everything was amazing with no complaints. Someone ordered Brussels sprouts as an app which came at 2:40pm. It was tasty. We all enjoyed the meal and the drinks. Staff were hospitable and we had an enjoyable experience. We came closer to closing time and they had extra biscuits, which they gave us for free. They were SO GOOD and huge!! We were able to split the bill equally and even pay online, which was so convenient! I’m sure we would return again next time we’re in the area!

Everything is DELICIOUS!! The food, the staff, the interior are all 10 out of 10. Super flavorful and unique. I have eaten here so many times and always walk away chatting to whoever is with me for an extraordinary amount of time about how good what we ate was...oh and drank! The cocktails are equally delicious as their witty names. On a recent visit I introduced Pure to my boyfriend from the coast. This fella is a meat eater and who has never met a brussel sprout that he will mildly enjoy much less go back willingly for seconds. Until eating at Pure! Shockingly he cleaned the bowl. Following the brussels we had the gnudi, the duck and the pork chop. All exceptional and dishes we mentioned well into the rest of our stay in the mountains. And not only is the food fantastic, the design beaut
