17 Plant Based

I loved everything about this unique dining experience in the heart of Evanston... I had dinner at 17 with two friends and we were seated at the counter. It was so interesting and so much fun to talk to French-trained Chef Luc Outrequin Quaisser as our food was prepared. We shared many different dishes, such as the delicious lentil rillettes, the tomato croquettes and the red endive salad to get us started. We then tried the sauteed mushrooms with polenta, as well as the kale pancakes. The simple names of these dishes don't convey how delicious they all were... super fresh and very tasty. For our main course we opted for the braised cabbage, the roasted cauliflower and the eggplant pasta. Again, each dish was a revelation in fresh, delicious plant-based cuisine. 17 Plant Based was more of an intimate, ‘fine dining’ experience than a standard vegan restaurant. I loved everything I had including the mocktails and desserts. My first time trying of few of these dishes including lentil rillettes, leek soup and the incredible beet root steak! Will be going back. And just a heads up, the more people find out about this spot the more you may want to book a reservation in advance.

Excellent evening at 17! We sat at the "bar" which felt like a chef's table and enjoyed every bite including the Kale Pancake and Lentil Rillettes starters, Beetroot Steak and Eggplant Pasta, plus a couple of cocktails. Very intimate setting and attention to every detail.

This review is to highlight the restaurant but moreso to highlight Brock, as he made my wife and I feel so special from the moment we walked in. I included the reason for our celebration in my online reservation, and Brock went above and beyond. He has incredible situational and conversational awareness and really is an exceptional host, with tasteful food and drink recommendations. And of course, the food was delicious and the atmosphere felt upscale and cozy (modern and intimate with mood lighting). We will definitely be coming back and I hope this restaurant is here to stay. All vegan, but also many gluten free appetizers and entrees as well. Recommend the Leek soup, Lentil with sourdough toast, Beetroot Steak, Ginger Pear mocktails, and Chocolate Bar for dessert.

We enjoyed everything, from the cocktails/mocktails all the way through dessert (the chocolate bar was super interesting). I loved the French flair to the dishes and the use of whole foods, not that I have anything against fake meat. While the entrees were good, I really liked the small plates, especially the leek soup and mushroom polenta- both had amazing textures/flavors. Service was attentive and friendly. I hope more people find out about this unique place; it'd be great to sustain a more upscale vegan experience in Evanston.
