This restaurant is the real old school deal for a New York City diner experience. The food and the service were good. I had bacon and eggs with French fries. We were able to walk right in and get a table with no wait. But they were pretty busy. I would go again when I’m in the area. The prices seemed high but that’s kind of the way things seem to be going. The only reason I did not give 5 stars was because when we were paying we were informed it was cash only. I’m glad I had cash on me. They may have a sign up about that but I didn’t see it when I walked in. Also, no restroom for customers which I thought was odd. Overall a nice diner.
The Viand is the quintessential NY diner/luncheonette. It's tiny bustling and the food always hits the spot. Go for the burgers, and the turkey clubs, stay for the people watching. The staff is always friendly and reliable. I've been frequenting the Viand for 30+ years. It's a small miracle that it's still open as most other similar places in the neighborhood have vanished. When it finally is subsumed by the realities of NY real estate, you'll know the last flicker of life on the UES is officially dead.
I got food poisoning from the roast beef in the chef’s salad that I took to go. I know it was the roast beef because I gave some to my dog and not long after, we both got sick. Perhaps it doesn’t happen there that often, since the place was cram jam packed. But it happened to me, so it could happen to anyone. Just beware.
Cash only at this UES gem. Perfect spot for a sandwich, quick bite to eat, or breakfast. Get nestled into a booth or at the counter for a slice of Americana in Manhattan.
I saw this place on the cover of Meanwhile, Eric Clapton’s recent album. And i thought it looked amazing, and like a perfect spot for charming, old school NYC-esque experience as a tourist. And it was indeed like that! Their black coffee was one of the best i've ever had in my life, i'd go back in a heartbeat. My friend and i had a small brunch and loved it too, even though maybe it was a bit overpriced i am not sure but it didn't bother me. ambiance and interior was also fantastic, and most of the customers were elder new yorkers and i actually loved it as a tourist, that’s exactly the vibe I was looking for. service was also fast. but there were one thing really bothered me. the server was clearly treating us differently compared to others. It’s not like we were dressed inappropriately o
