The Essex Inn

A great place to stay. The historic house is absolutely beautiful. Our king size bedroom was very well appointed and comfortable. The bathroom was a bit small but obviously to have bathrooms in every bedroom in a house built in the 1850s required a lot of retrofitting. The owners/inn keepers Greg and Jennifer were very welcoming and attentive. The breakfasts were excellent. We also enjoyed a great dinner at the restaurant across the street (1710 Tavern) that is owned & operated by the Essex Inn owners/inn keepers. While the dinner and service were excellent, smoke from the fireplace filled the dining room rather than going up the chimney. We left the restaurant reeking of smoke.

I cannot say enough about how wonderful our stay at the Essex Inn was. The house is overflowing with historic charm, and every room reflects its timeless beauty. Our guest room was not only beautifully appointed but also incredibly comfortable — we slept soundly each night, wrapped in the kind of quiet and coziness you hope for on a getaway. Owners Greg and Jennifer Huff are incredibly accommodating and genuinely eager to share the rich history of Tappahannock, which added so much to our visit. Breakfast at the Inn is nothing short of spectacular. Each morning we enjoyed an array of delicious options—freshly made pastries, sausage or bacon, fresh fruit, home fries, and more—all beautifully served on fine china. My hubby and I spent one night at the Inn. The house is beautiful, full of interesting antiques, light fixtures, china and art. The owners are very charming and happy to provide a tour and talk about the house and antiques. Our room was lovely. Very comfy bed. Three course delicious breakfast and a amazing coffee machine for espresso, latte cafe or decafe. Outside porches, covered porch and garden area to sit outside. We would go back.

This is a historical gem in the heart of beautiful Tappahannock, VA. The Inn is situated right near the Rappahannock river with a beautiful garden, and a lovely restaurant called the 1710 Tavern right across the street. The guest rooms are huge and beautifully decorated. We had my daughter's wedding here and the tavern catered it. It was absolutely perfect. I would recommend this accommodation for family reunions, weddings, or just a quiet get away. The owners of both businesses are amazing.

Stayed here as part of wife’s birthday weekend and loved it. The innkeeper Greg is a wonderful host and fountain of knowledge about the Inn and the town and much more. The Essex Inn was very comfortable the breakfast was first rate and the “employee of the month—the coffee machine— made an excellent latte— regular of decaf.
