Randomly stumbled into Philomena’s Salumeria while I was in Utica and it was such a good find. The sandwiches are super authentic, loaded, and just done right. The bread is unreal too, baked fresh in-house and you can 100% tell the difference. Really good food and quality ingredients. If you’re anywhere near Utica and want a proper Italian sandwich, don’t skip this spot.
Amazing food. The best sandwiches in the area and the bread is what really makes it. Their tomato pie is also the best around. Right now the lines are long so it’s best to call ahead.
So....we were getting ready to head back to NYC from the beautiful Union Station in Utica...and...we wanted a place to stop by to get a bite before our train. We stepped into Philomena's and the aroma was so rich and authentic of an Italian Nonnie kitchen! The food was AMAZING. The meatballs were SO good I did not want sauce on them, nor a dash of pepper..and that never happens! The pistachio muffin was bursting with flavor; NOT too heavy, sweet, nor greasy, etc. It was perfect! The pasta fagioli soup was full of various vegetable and bean ingredients in a savory tomato based thick hot broth! Mmmm!! Wished I could buy a loaf of bread or two bc the smell was SO good!!!!!...but we ate too much at Thanksgiving and our guts needed a rest! Lol! My husband said the chocolate Danish was
Tomato pie is one of the best in the city, especially their special on the weekends. Awesome meatballs, also their bakery stuff like muffins are incredible. Only thing I was not a fan of was their bread, it was too soft and kind of had a paper shavings like texture in the middle which was surprising considering their tomato pie was very crispy and good dough. One person mentioned their sandwich was soggy and I can see that with their kind of bread. Everything else is fantastic though
This place is phenomenal, and exactly what Utica needed. All of the food is outstanding and made fresh. From the bread, to the cutlets, everything is quality. Roma's finally got knocked from the Tomato Pie throne, something I never thought would happen. Have been going once every other week since they opened and don't plan on changing that anytime soon.
