PGA WEST Pete Dye Mountain Course

Played here in early January. The weather was nice and course still in good shape. The rough was higher then I’m use to back home. Driving range was small and you had to wait to get a spot. The course is beautiful with the last several holes on the back 9 really standing out scenery wise. Front 9 has some nice mountain backdrops and a hole or two up against the mountain. No houses on the front which is nice. Back 9 starts surrounded by homes/condos for the first few hikes. It then opens up into the mountains and becomes a true beauty. Photo opportunities all over. One negative we heard goi g into the round and found to be very true was pace of play. There were extended waits on every hole. As you would expect a PGA West course isn’t going to be cheap. Played mid-March and had a phenomenal experience. Amazing setting (of course) but the holes are interesting and challenging, and the conditioning was perfect. Greens were as pure as can be, and firm. The course seems to be well run, with timers on the GPS to keep people moving. Our round was about 4:10. Note that greens fees are substantially reduced in the afternoons, so it was actually good value (relatively speaking) teeing off shortly after 2:00.

The views! Taking in the mountains and terrain on every hole was a sight to see. Coming from the Midwest we don’t get experiences like this. Course was in great condition, my only complaint is there was quite a bit of old/dead on some of the holes.

If PGA West Pete Dye mountain course isn't on your bucket list, then it should be. For those familiar with local desert golf, this course has all the things you would expect from a fancy desert course (pristine fresh fairway and greens, fast putts, near-perfect conditions, beautiful clubhouse, great practice amenities). For the golf nuts out there, let me explain some things I find so interesting about this course. Distance: from the tips, its "only 6666 yards" - so you should be able to play a 3w off the tee most of the round, right? Sure, if you can carry every shot to maximum distance, then yes. The first few holes were uneventful but decent. But after hole 3 I was awe struck with the beauty of this course. Stunning desert mountain views with a well kept golf course tucked into it. For a beautiful place to golf and a good round of golf, this is "the place". I have just been captivated with all the pga west courses as they are all pristine and well run, for a fair price.
