Was looking for food around my area and came across this place. The main reason to come here is for the soup dumplings, but they have a bunch of other noodle dishes as well. For sure if you never had soup dumplings or want to try it, this is possibly the main reason to come here. We got both the spicy and the regular, but I thing the regular one is fine by itself. The spicy one had more of a curry type of flavor and wasn’t the spicy I was expecting. Another notable item was the wontons in a spicy peanut sauce which is definitely a new flavor I never had. The restaurant seems very spacious as it was filled with a lot of people, but didn’t feel overwhelmingly packed. The food came out fairly fast, but the soup dumplings was what took the longest of them all.
It’s Chinese New Years. Gotta have soup dumplings to celebrate, right? Went to Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao on 33rd St in NYC. It is right across the street from the Empire State Building. I don’t know if it’s always packed on a Tuesday evening or if the New Years’ thing drew others like me. There was a line at 8:30p. Got a table by 9p. Line settled down after about 9:30p. The place proudly displayed all of their Michelin awards. I’d be a tough Michelin critic: what sets this place apart from any other? If this is “the best,” I’ve basically decided that a soup dumpling is a soup dumpling. I tried their Lucky Six where you get one of each flavor. They should take a page from Russell Stovers playbook and give you a map like finding which chocolate is which. I could probably guess which o
we ordered the shanghai stir-fried udon, pork and veg wonton w spicy peanut sauce, and scallop and pork dumplings. the wonton came with 8 pieces and the dumplings came with 6, which was delicious and more than enough for two people. the entire meal was around $40. the staff was very friendly, and the best part about this place is that they played red velvet b-sides.. 10/10 so peak
Seems a bit overhyped. I was brought here twice by two different non-Asian friends who swore it was a great spot for xiaolongbao, but it didn’t live up to my expectations. The food is overall quite fatty/oily and lacks depth of flavor. That said, I was pleasantly surprised by the Abalone & Pork Soup Dumplings and the Ube Red Bean Bao (dessert). It’s also still a decent option for an affordable lunch or dinner with friends (around 50€ for two people). Service is fast, though not particularly friendly.
I stumbled on Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao on my way out of my upcoming new office in the middle of Manhattan and I am so glad I went in. I tried the house specials, the soup dumplings and the dumpling soup, and ordered bok choy as an appetizer. Everything was delicious. The dumplings were delicate and full of flavor, the soup was rich, and the bok choy was perfectly cooked. The atmosphere felt authentic, like I was eating in Asia, and the staff were warm and attentive. I noticed on my way out that the restaurant has been recognized by the Michelin Guide for several years, and that recognition is well deserved. The food quality was outstanding and the prices were not overly expensive. Highly recommend.
