Hong Kong Dragon

After searching for somewhere to celebrate Lunar New Year, I saw Hong Kong Dragon pop up. I was immediately drawn to their menu, and when I came in I knew it was the best choice. My first reaction when I sat down with the service was WOW. It was welcoming, attentive, and everything I’ve looked for in restaurants. The food was amazing. General Gao platter had best sauce ever. The soup and shumai were so well seasoned. Can’t wait to come back!

While I have been going to Hong Kong Dragon for virtually my entire life and have many fond memories of ordering takeout from there, I’ve noticed lately—and quite sadly, that the quality has declined considerably. It pains me to say this, but based upon a few decisive, and more importantly in the restaurant world, but recent--experiences, the Hong Kong Dragon may no longer be my go-to. First, the menu and presentation have changed in ways that don’t work well. When ordering what appears to be a combo (for example, General Tso’s chicken with pork fried rice), the food now comes packed in a small tray. Always on target for what you order! Always Fresh and hot: house fried rice kills (skip the pork fried rice-too much soy sauce); Egg rolls perfect; boneless spare ribs have minimal fat; Peking raviolis with ginger sauce are great; general tso chicken, order extra chili oil on side if you like it real spicy; beef teriyaki seasoned perfectly; lobster sauce, good deal, best hot and sour soup, skip the chicken noodle. Just enjoy trying new things! They do good food!

Hong Kong Dragon has become me and Gretchen’s (fiancé) go-to spot, and for good reason. The food is consistently fresh and flavorful, but what really makes this place special is the people. The staff are welcoming, attentive, and genuinely kind, which makes every visit feel like more than just a meal. Out of all the restaurants in Winthrop, this is my favorite.
