Formosa Chinese Restaurant

The worst restaurant in Amherst. The food was extremely greasy and tasted awful. The dumplings were barely warm — some parts were still cold, like they had just been taken out of the freezer and reheated. And without any explanation, they automatically added a 20% tip on the bill.

This is clearly a declining Chinese restaurant. The décor looks like it hasn’t been updated in at least 20 years—very much the style of an old-school Chinese restaurant. The tables and floors felt a bit sticky, and there was a faint but persistent smell of old grease lingering in the air. The service was particularly disappointing. The servers appeared to speak with a Taiwanese accent, and once they heard my mainland Chinese accent, their attitude noticeably shifted toward being cold and condescending. (I’ve written many reviews before, but this is the first time I’ve felt the need to mention this kind of issue.) We went at lunchtime, and the restaurant wasn’t busy. Don't listen to the negative reviewers. Those must have been exceptional circumstances. It's consistently the best and most authentic Chinese food I eat in Western Mass, Boston, and NYC.

I come to Formosa often and have tried lots of the dishes here. It is one of my favorite restaurants in town. The portion sizes are large and the flavors are very good and comforting. The atmosphere here is good and there is lots of space available. The workers here are super sweet and are great at serving large groups of people.

Some of the best Chinese food! We ordered online for pickup for a group of 5. It was ready within 20 minutes. Everything came hot and really good quantities for the price. We got sesame chicken, chicken with mixed vegetables, chicken in garlic sauce, hot and sour soup, and fish fillet in a Sichuan chili sauce. All the dishes came with rice. Everything was seriously amazing, the chicken in garlic sauce and hot and sour soup being my favorites! We had a lot leftover too so it was good for at least one more meal.
