Deano’s at Deer Creek

We had breakfast at Deano’s at Deer Creek in Topeka and it was fantastic. You can tell right away this isn’t a chain restaurant — most everything is made from scratch and the quality shows. The biscuits and gravy were excellent, the pancakes were big and fluffy, and we also tried their famous Cozy Roll, which absolutely lived up to the hype. One of the highlights was the owner and chef coming out to visit with us. He shared the history behind the restaurant, growing up in a family involved in the restaurant business and eventually starting his own place here. I have been here several times because I want to like the food. I really do. I kept going back before writing this because I wanted to be fair to the owner and make sure I wasn’t just catching them on an off day. Unfortunately, after multiple visits, I can confirm: it was not a fluke. It was a pattern. A very salty pattern. The good first: Every single time, the staff has been fantastic. Friendly, helpful, and honestly carrying this place on their backs. The food also comes out hot, and the restaurant is clean, which I genuinely appreciate. Breakfast The sandwich with egg, bacon, garlic aioli, and brioche bun was actually good. The egg and aioli did their best to negotiate peace with the sodium levels, and somehow it worked. We used to visit Lonnie Q’s years ago and were so sad when it closed, but his son has done an incredible job bringing it back! He’s stayed true to the classic favorites everyone loved, the BEST cheesy potatoes, flavorful pulled pork, and the unbelievably moist and tender smoked turkey, while adding his own flair with new menu items and a great breakfast lineup. All of the employees were also wonderful! The front-of-house staff were friendly and accommodating, making sure we had everything we needed. The owner even came over to chat with us about our experience and make sure we were happy. He seems like such a genuinely nice guy who’s passionate about carrying on the legacy and building Deano’s name with quality, delicious food. Give them a try, you won’t regret it! I had the turkey sandwich with cheesy potatoes and zesty slaw. The turkey was so moist and not too smokey. The potatoes were amazing (especially if you eat a bite with a jalapeno and some meat). And I've never liked slaw but that zesty slaw was so good I ate every last bit. We took some cinnamon rolls to go. I can't wait to eat them. They look so good!

First time eating here. The smash burger is really good! I’ve never cared for slaw on anything, on the side, fine. However, the slaw & jalapeño together is really good. I thought the cheesy potatoes were better than Lonny’s but Al said they were the same just more consistent. They are really good. The French fries are like shoestring fries, (my favorite) are delicious too. I had a great lunch. Thank you very much, & we’ll see you for breakfast soon.
