Central Branch - Howard County Library System

Great library with an excellent staff that's always available to help. The place is always clean, stocked with library essentials (i.e., paper in printers, copiers, etc.), and they have great technology. You can print from your laptop, an excellent technological service, which I haven't seen offered at other libraries. For parents, they offer services, activities, and afternoon snacks for the children.

This library is truly special — you can feel love, care, and kindness in everything they do. The staff are always ready to help, guide, and support you. There are classes and activities for everyone, and shelves full of books in many different languages. It’s more than just a library — it’s a place where people are genuinely welcomed and cared for.

The children's librarians here are great and we love the monthly scavenger hunt, but the lack of cleanliness, particularly in the children's area, is concerning. This was the state of the carpets in that area when we visited yesterday. I spoke to the branch manager and she said the library is a tenant (assuming the county owns the building and "leases" the space to the library system) and that the facilities contract is to deep/steam clean the carpets twice a year. For a high traffic library where consumption of foods/drinks in carpeted areas is not closely monitored (layout of the children's area would make that very difficult, also not their job) that seems woefully insufficient. All the branches I've visited so far are terrific. One of the best library systems in the country. No overdue fees for most items and a very customer friendly approach overall. Staff is excellent.
