Captain Johnny's Crab House

I grew up in Maryland and eating fresh crabs with something we look forward to every summer. However, for the past decade, I have been living in Alabama and blue crabs aren’t available. I was really looking forward to getting some fresh blue crabs when I came to visit my daughter in Virginia. Unfortunately I was very disappointed when I got home and opened the bag. These are some of the smallest “large” males I’ve ever eaten. They barely measured 5 1/2 inches point to point and were not very meaty.

Never thought I’d be saying this but the quality has really went down a couple weeks ago I got a half bushel of number 1’s. They were supposed to open at 11 and didn’t open until after 12 so I waited in the parking lot. Got home and had a handful of 1’s and the rest 2’s. Called back because the price of the crabs and traveling from Richmond is not a loss I can take. Was told I could get 20-30 dollars my next order. Go down yesterday 7/18/2025 and they are out of 1’s so I explain the discount and ask about the weight of the females and #2’s. Was told the females were the better choice. My sister got #2’s. I get to the river and I got a bag full of baby female crabs that are mostly soft and hallow. I don’t know if it was because of the discount, I offered to buy them and wait for #1’s to use

Super friendly, excellent fresh crabs. We drove here from Richmond because they had the only available softshells in the area. After calling around to every seafood market locally, we called and they had fresh crabs just off the truck. They held a dozen box for us and it was well worth the drive. The crabs were still kicking and were very meaty and sweet. They had the exact taste you look for when eating a fresh softshell crab and their prices were unbeatable for the value. We will return for more. I'm interested in trying the steamed hardshells. Glad we saw this place in Westpoint.

They had LIVE #1 & #2 Jimmy's!!! Maybe my timing is awful but I've had a really hard time finding crabs this season....soooo THANKFUL they had them!! Also GREAT customer service, the young lady had planned to put them in my Jeep for me so I wouldn't get dirty carrying the bushel! I thought that was really nice of her!

Ladies are friendly and do a great job cooking and seasoning. Always stop by when I’m back home visiting as a treat.
