BBQ and catfish as good as my dad's. Outdoor patio is nice; I like it better than the dining room. Pic is of the bbq plate, but we prefer the smaller bbq tray. Catfish sandwich is really good. Sweet potato fries are crinkle cut without all the atypical extra seasoning some places use. A go-to diner when we're at UNCH and want "real" food. :)
Pork, Brunswick stew, coke slaw, hush puppies, collard greens. Oh my. Delicious. Large takeout window in front, but make your way around the side , over the patio and through the unmarked door to sit inside. Basic tables and menus on the wall. Nothing pretentious, just a place to eat good food. Wish the cups weren’t styrofoam. Smelled a little like fried catfish, so may have to try that next time. The service was as good as the food. Bought extra to bring home. Loved it!
I honestly think this may have been the best Eastern NC Style BBQ sandwich I have ever had. In fact it may be the best of all styles I have had, and I have had a ton. This sandwich was HUGE! Perfect level of vinegar sauce/spice. Moisture level was PERFECT! Only wish I had room for some sides because the menu certainly intrigued me.
I had a nice experience overall. I got a bbq sandwich and fries. I haven’t been to Allen and sons In a couple years but I felt the food size portion has went down . My bag of fries wasn’t filled all the way and the sandwich was thinner than I remembered. But the food was good. I would come back. It would be nice if they had a lunch special but I didn’t see one available.
The last restaurant headed west, away from eastern NC, where you can get real eastern NC style barbecue. And it’s a great one. Meat is smoky and flavorful with enough vinegar and pepper to bring the tanginess without too much heat or vinegar. Collards were about perfect and while slaw was finely chopped and not too sweet. Hush puppies were finished perfectly. If I lived within 30 miles this would be my goto place! 9.5 out of 10!
