The Cherryvale Bed & Breakfast

Shirley Ann and Jim were very accommodating. Beautiful rooms and a lovely breakfast. Sweet little extra touches like water in the room and trains on our coffee cups. Got to hear about the local history as well which was neat. Jim is doing some beautiful work restoring the building.

We lived in nearby Independence for years, moved away several years ago, and came back for the wedding of a friend's daughter. This place is unique. It's been in a constant state of renovation for as long as I can remember. The hallways and lobby have had construction detritus in them every time I've ever set foot inside. I was surprised at how little had changed in 3-4 years. That said, the restored rooms are nicely done, clean, and tastefully decorated. We had a similar check-in experience as another reviewer in that the hostess could not get her credit card machine to work. In trying to calculate the hotel taxes, it displayed a crazy price 200 to 300 times the room rate. We also ended up paying with cash. The room was clean and comfortable. The building is very unique and historic. Owners are in the middle of a renovation and the building is full of building supplies. Building smells a little musty, but the room did not share that odor. Shirley Ann and Jim are very friendly hosts and willing to please their guests. There is a laundry room on site, which makes it nice for extended stays. We stayed 4 nights and were pleased with how clean our room was. The train tracks are right next to the building, but we did not hear a train during the evening hours ever. Great little coffee shop down the block for that early morning stop as well. All in all, our stay was very comfortable.

I needed a place to stay near Thayer, KS and I found The Cherryvale B&B. I'm very happy I found their website and was able to secure a room. I was greeted at the door by Shirley and the hospitality began. Both Jim and Shirley made sure that my stay was relaxing and informative. From what I would like for breakfast to what was available in Cherryvale; and the breakfast was delicious.||When you come here you will see a work in progress, from the front door and throughout parts of the building. I felt this added to my stay because I love to see people creating things with their own hands. Both Jim and Shirley are very creative and talented people. If you are a couple of history buffs like my wife and I, this is a perfect stop for you. We stayed in the Vivian Vance themed room, with all of the retro furnishings taking you back to the 1950’s. The building itself was originally a hotel to accommodate railroad travelers, built at the intersection of the Frisco and Santa Fe lines. If you have an interest in trains, this stop is also for you. The furnishings are all period. Our hosts, Jim and Shirley Ann, are very special people. The Hotel is a labor of love and is absolutely a work in progress. I would guess in 5 years it will be spectacular, but for now you might have to walk past a couple of projects to get to your room. Once you get to your room, it’s an oasis.
