Tavern at the Inn

The conservatory was a really nice peaceful place to eat. The breakfast was really nice. I liked it better than the lunch. Breakfast felt like real food, whereas lunch felt like it was trying to hard to be fancy. Maybe it was just personal preference, the gnocchi looked really pretty but it tasted plain, I thought there would be more pesto in the sauce. It was fresh, maybe someone who likes healthier food and mushrooms would like it more than I. I had french toast with bananas for breakfast and that was very good. All of it was fresh, the sausages were real sausage links which was a pleasant surprise because often breakfast places will give you dry precooked patties. I also reviewed the inn, but the real, glaring issue is the restaurant. Setting aside the host, who was warm, friendly, and inviting, most of the rest of the experience is awful. Even with a $15 'Bed and Breakfast' coupon, it was over-priced for what it was. (A true Western omelet would've been about $20-24 depending upon how you define it.) The breakfast service was neither friendly or unfriendly -- just straight to the point and direct. Not necessarily a problem until later when we returned for our six o'clock dinner reservation. Unfortunately things at The Tavern have changed in what was our favorite spot for years to come in the winter. Portions have become skimpy. The Prime Rib is labeled as Grilled Prime Rib which is actually a ribeye steak thats worth about $18 not $46.

We were traveling with a tourist group staying at the hotel and we dined here twice. The first was a group dinner with a limited menu. I had the chicken pot pie, which was one of the best I've ever had. The pie was stuffed with large cuts of white meat and vegetables bathed in a thick, made-by-grandma tasty gravy all covered in light puff pastry. It was almost too much for one person. My wife had the filet mignon, a thick, massive, eight-ounce cut of tenderloin covered with a red wine sauce. She loved the filet but could only eat about half. Unfortunately, I was completely full of pot pie and couldn't help her out. What a waste! We had our second dinner the next night as a couple and sat in the garden room.
