And boy, was she right—especially when it comes to these apple fritters. Normally, apple fritters are doughy, overcooked, dry, and suspiciously void of apples, let alone apple flavor. But that couldn’t be further from the truth here. Just look at these beauties: the crispy golden-brown exterior, the ideal thickness, the perfect size—pure perfection. The flavor? Out of this world. My son turned 6 while we were on vacation and a family member bought him a donut cake to celebrate, which was a new (and delightful) to us experience. A week later back home, we hosted a birthday party for him and his friends and also wanted to celebrate with a donut cake. We love Johnny's Donuts and contacted Kim to ask if they were able to do this special order which she was excited to do in spite of the fact that they had never made one before and was willing to try it out. Apparently you need special machinery to make them but we appreciated that they took on the challenge and freehanded the design!! Kim called the day before the scheduled pickup to confirm. Delicious donuts worth a great old-time feel in the place. Fun experience for the kids, but remember cash ONLY! A lot of times when ordering it feels like if you don't know what you want you have to choose fast or get out of the way as they keep demanding to know what you want. I know they are busy, but a little patience (especially with kids) goes along way!
