The Coffee Grinder, in the heart of walkable downtown Newport Rhode Island, offers multiple coffee, tea, and other drinks, as well as food options. The service is superb: friendly, upbeat, and efficient. A public restroom is available in the building, down a back hallway, to customers. My daughter and I were both more than satisfied with the experience. Even though the Coffee Grinder does not focus on establishing heavy social media presence the way other coffee houses in Newport seem to do, the core reality is that the coffee is top-notch and the prices within range of similar coffee houses. We went here only because the coffee house my daughter picked out due to social media reviews had a line about half a block down, and by serendipity we were fortunate to find the Coffee Grinder: no

I’ve known the owner, Alyssa, for many years, and she’s been a fixture on the wharf for decades. While it was sad to see her move from that original location, her business is still going strong, and the new spot offers just as lovely a view. Alyssa is incredibly hardworking and deeply dedicated. She’s up at 5 a.m. every morning baking her own pastries, which truly shows in the quality of everything she serves. My favorite has always been the hot chocolate. Even though I haven’t visited Newport for almost two years, I can confidently say this place is always worth a visit. Alyssa is warm, personable, and genuinely loves connecting with both locals and tourists, which makes the experience feel special every time.

It was a freezing day in Newport and we stopped in hoping for a hot coffee. We wanted to support a local spot, but honestly wish we had just walked the extra half mile to Starbucks—at least there you actually get espresso in a latte. I hesitated to write this after seeing how many negative reviews there already were, but felt compelled to add another. The prices are an absolute crime. Our lattes tasted like watered-down coffee grounds with barely any coffee flavor at all. And the cost—$24 for two medium lattes! My mom and I couldn’t help but laugh while drinking coffee that wouldn’t even pass at a basic diner. A plain bagel for $10? A danish for $9? A single cookie for $8? These prices feel less like quality and more like we’re paying someone’s rent. Really wish we had read the reviews bef

I wish I had read the reviews before spending my money here. Two bagels toasted with cream cheese almost $18! The bagels themselves were over $6 each, plus $1 each for cream cheese and $1 each for getting them toasted. The bagels were disappointing, seemed more like they were microwaved rather than toasted. The amount of cream cheese was embarrassing. The other coffee shops in the area had lines out the door- this place was nearly empty. Should’ve known. Would not recommend.

I love this place, original location and newer (not so new). Alyssa rocks, such great energy! It’s a bit pricey and it seems weird folks give low star reviews because of price points. Everything is fresh homemade and it’s a PRIME (i.e. $$) location. I support local small biz, happy it’s not another chain. So please quit yer complaining on costs, and support a nice person with a small biz! Geez…
