China City

I speak Mandarin Chinese as an American of Chinese descent. We were driving from Boston to our home in Texas. Stopped in Verona VA for provisions at the Food Lion. I noticed China City Grill and entered by myself to order take out meals. To my greeting of hello in Mandarin, the Chinese woman grunted. I said my father is from China and asked where was she from in China. These questions are culturally perfectly normal among people of Chinese descent. Her rude response shocked me. Most unfriendly defensive person to person communications I experienced in China and USA. I left and did not order food because I did not trust her or the cafe operations. Behavior and attitudes were not normal or customary in America or China from my personal and professional experiences.

Since moving to Staunton we are still trying to find our new favorite restaurants. We found a favorite at China City in Verona. The pictures don't reflect how delicious the Fried Dumplings and Egg Foo Young were. We had a classic Chinese food and movie night at home and really enjoyed it.

Mostly a takeout restaurant but the food is consistently good and the prices are very reasonable. I usually get the veggie lo mein and spring rolls and they're always yummy!

The ordering process was efficient! The cook time was quicker than stated. The meal, my favorite "Hot and Sour Soup" with two egg rolls was delicious! The quiet dine in experience was enjoyed with a good book everyone should read.

This is the house special lo mein. Very good! My favorite dish from here is pork egg foo young. Holy smokes! That sauce is amazing. Where I'm from Chinese restaurants use brown gravy. China City uses I think hoisin sauce with theirs. It is heated so it won't cool off your food. I'll post a pic of that when I find it lol I always ask for my egg roll to be cooked extra. It brings out such a better flavor and the skin is crispy. It's worth the drive if you're not in Verona.
