My first visit was exploratory. I wanted to see a James Beard award winner working near me (out in the boondocks of Madison County). I met Camille and was enamored by her good graces. She showed me her wood fired oven and her wares. I allowed as to how I wasn’t much of a sweets person and requested a loaf of her soft bread. She put in a slice of her apple pie gratis. She had baked treats on display, and as she says, “there will always be pie”. The apple pie was good. On subsequent visits I have picked up pie ordered for thanksgiving p, and cake/pie for my wife. Camille and Casey have both been kind and engaging on every visit. Two thumbs up!
I am STILL thinking about the coffee cake I ate over 24 hours ago... Every bite was infused with joy and skill. It takes a lot of hustle to create such an easy atmosphere with genuinely inviting flavors. Thank you for a wonderful visit Camille, can't wait for my next bite! .... Don't forget to grab a bag of granola to tide you over, seriously.
Tucked around a bend on one of Western North Carolina’s classically winding roads, arriving at the Walnut Family Bakery feels a little like wandering into a storybook. A hand-painted sign—made by owner and pastry chef Camille Cogswell's talented mom—lets you know you’re in the right place. The road curves into a small parking area below a small blue bakery perched on the hill, right beside the matching blue house Camille calls home. This level of scene-setting is worth mentioning, because for many visitors, a trip to the Walnut Family Bakery is an excursion. Still, plenty of locals from Madison County, as well a folks from neighboring Buncombe County, regularly make the trip for the Thursday and Saturday bake days. For me, the visit was long-awaited—from Los Angeles all the way to Western
