Verna's Drive In

Now this is chicken Katsu! The shoyu chicken is delicious and meatloaf is fantastic! Highly recommend Verna’s.

Four stars are about right. The restaurant is dated, as is most of the places in the area. Staff was friendly. There are a few picnic tables around the side that are clean-ish. We got the Chicken Katsu, the Smoke Meat w/onions, and a cheeseburger deluxe. The Katsu was amazing. Great taste and nice crunch. The Smoke Meat was smoked pork belly. Lots of smokey taste. I like pork belly, but some people might not enjoy the fat in pork belly. The rice was average, and the mac-n-cheese was as good as most places. They forgot the "deluxe" part of the cheeseburger, so we needed to go back and have it fixed. I don't think I'd crave it again when we come back, but I wouldn't turn it down if that's where everyone wanted to go.

You will not be disappointed with this Gem if you're looking for something quick to eat. Ordered the fish plate and I was pleasantly surprised, the breading was delicious, fish was not soggy, it was very tasty. The Mac salad was definitely impressive, homemade of you all me, and a generous portion of rice. My only gripe for the 1 start reduction is the price, it's pushing a restaurant price point and I'm not sure it competes there, but it was tasty. I would order a whole extra side of the Mac salad. Great location, I will definitely return!

Only stopped by once to get food, I wish I would of stopped by more. Great service, I got the pastrami sandwich, fries, & Mac salad. It all amazing. A must go to when in Hilo.

Local spot and I’m sure is like beloved becuase local grow up with it. For tourists it was unwelcoming and sketchy. Mac salad great. Decent food but also yikes, it’s taking a chance lol
