Tropicana Eatery

I used to live in this area, and for the last 10 years I haven’t found anybody within three hours of my new home who makes or sell goat soup. After a full decade of disappointment, I finally decided to make the 3.5-hour pilgrimage back here for their Tuesday goat soup. And let me tell you… I’m glad I did. First things first: the place is exactly how I remember it. The bathroom situation? Classic. You need a key attached to a five-pound bar, but the bathroom is CLEAN, so I’m not complaining. On my way home, decided to stop Tropicana Eatery in Spring, MD. to give them a shot and see how good the food was. I even asked the girl were they a part of the Tropicana in Marlow Heights? She said she didn’t think so. I Ordered a large Oxtail dinner with extra rice and peas and requested a lot of gravy on the meal.. I was so disappointed. First the girl taking order was dry and wasn’t too friendly . I guess I’m used to someone saying hi when I walk in and the place being personable. Ordered my food and was truly excited to get home to eat. I got home and the oxtail was completely fatty and not good. It wasn’t full of flavor like I normally have. I ordered a small jerk chicken with rice and peas, a large oxtail with rice and peas and 1 festival. The jerk chicken was more sweet and spicy than jerk chicken. The oxtail was missing gravy. Like I was given boiled oxtail with no gravy. Picture below. The festival was the only good thing from my order. This was the first and will be the last time I go to this restaurant.

I guess this place has some good days...and bad days.... I used to frequent here years ago and the food was amazing - but I stopped there recently and it left a lot to be desired! my rice and peas was as hard as bricks and also the Cabbage did not have any flavor so once I got home I had to throw the rice on the stove and also warm up some of my home cooked cabbage and mix it in with their cabbage just to give it flavor.

I was in this part of town and looked up a Caribbean restaurant. I decided to try this place with on the reviews. I got here just before 12 noon and I was able to be out within 15 minutes. I ordered a large oxtail with rice and peas and plantain, and the portions did not disappoint. I also noticed that the oxtail which was $20 was cheaper than typical Caribbean restaurants but they did not skimp on the portion. Service was satisfactory.
