Tilman's

This is a fun place to eat and is perfect for a little lunch with friends. They have some fun stuff inside you can buy, various chocolates, seasonings, cheeses of course, etc. I got the soup and grilled cheese. It was good, but nothing special. The portion size was a little small.

While everything is tasty enough, food is incredibly overpriced for what you get. We had two appetizers wheer bread was the main component and neither was warmed and both rather underwhelming; plus, the butter was too cold to be spread. At this price point we would not come back.

To begin, my wife and I didn't know what to expect with this gem along the downtown pedestrian mall in Charlottesville, but it was an intriguing concept given the counter service for ordering. We're so glad we made the decision. They were quite attentive in the sense of bringing food and drinks out right away, refilling out water carafe and engaging in conversation when that was appropriate. As you can see from my photos, there's a bit of a store concept also here with unique food and beverage related products. Because we hadn't been here before, we did opt for reservations. It is worth noting that dining at the bar in the back was another option. Recently my wife and I were early for a dinner reservation and luckily happened upon Tilman’s for a quick round. They have a solid selection of drinks, even spirit free for those who don’t partake. Unfortunately we were short for time so we didn’t have time to check out their shop, which appeared to be well stocked.

The service was stellar, the cheese selection is great, the wine/cocktail options are decent, but I think the food is largely 3/5 stars. The pickle plate is lackluster and they sell a bland salsa under the name of “a tomato and onion gazpacho”. That said, the brie, fig, and speck crostini was good. I think we just ordered the wrong things - play it safe and come for the cheese/wine.
