Wow! I’m a mother of 4, and I just got kicked out of the Thomas Crane children’s library! I do not live in Quincy, but we travel one hour from another town in order for my son to attend a theatre program here. In order to not have to wait 2 hours in my freezing cold car I came into the library to wait and charge my phone. The librarians have told me I cannot do this and I have to leave! This seems like overreach and very hostile behavior on the part of the librarian to a person (obviously a mom!) who is simply sitting quietly in a corner looking at a phone. I have come here in the past multiple times without my children to check books out for them and there was never a problem. Highly DO NOT RECOMMEND!

super cute and cozy library section for kids. we always find great reads. the older librarians can be a bit snappy in how they interact with folks but besides that it’s small but big enough for kids to play and have space to read. there’s also computers which are easy to navigate, dvds, cds. the bathroom decor is super cute. there’s free parking and it’s easy to find.

Great library! They always have good events for children and are very helpful with recommendations, if you need. There is a historical (original) part in the building, to the left, that is gorgeous. You feel like you are in a museum. It has stained windows and a beautiful fireplace. The building was built in 1881 by a famous architect Henry Hobson Richardson and is listed in the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and U.S. National Historic Landmark. The landscaping design around the library is awesome and always very well taken care of.

I recently had an unpleasant experience at this library. A staff member wearing glasses, seated near the entrance of the children’s reading room on the ground floor, behaved rudely and dismissively toward me simply because I struggled to unlock the restroom door. I have visited many libraries across Massachusetts, but this is the first time I’ve encountered a library restroom that requires a key. I hope the library will review its service and procedures to create a more welcoming environment for everyone.
