Visited the Frost and Found market at 12 Crane today, which was full of interesting, local vendors. We decided to stay for lunch at the Dark Horse, and we ended up very glad we did. I call this the "new" Dark Horse tavern, as it is clear that there is new effort to make this a favorite food stop. While the food ordering time was a bit delayed, there was only the friendly bar tender on duty for drinks and ordering. There is an above average offering of draft beers including Double Down and Guinness on tap. Once we ordered, however, the food came quickly, and the fish and chips received 2 thumbs up from mom, dad, and Josh who ordered this. My son gave the homemade tartar sauce and the coleslaw a thumbs up as well. The fish soup was not ready yet, so I went for the Guinness beef stew f
I love this place but can't speak too much for the food: Its an adventure just to find it in the dark as the building is a repurposed industrial factory. The decor extremely welcoming and entices you to relax right off the bat. Not a single TV. Period. It takes you back to the real purpose of a bar: socialize: human contact and the right here. I felt adventurous and tried the Shepard pie. Presentation is here to elevate your apetite despite the simplicty of the dish. Impressed with the content: lots of meat, herbs and the right amount of veggies. But lightly too dry. There was an after taste that didn't sit right with me and did not finish it. MIL and wife did enjoy and finished their meal. If I were local, I'd be trying this out a little more often. Service: mother and daughter team that
Love the atmosphere and the music in the lounge/bar area. But the service was beyond horrendous. We were a party of 2 and sat at the bar, a party of 2 came in after us and sat at another part of the bar, they were served their drinks and their apps before we even got our first drinks. We were ready to order our food by the time they finally got to us for our drinks but they didn't even give us a chance to to order food and just walked away after our drink order. We finally got served our drinks but still had to wait longdr to order our food. Once we finally got our food and pretty disappointing as well. We ordered smash burgers and both of them were dry as can be. There was supposed to be Whiskey Aioli on mine and there was none at all, and the other burger had maybe a nickle sized dollop
Service and food were both disappointing. After waiting quite a while, the waitress/bartender informed us that the ovens were down, which explained the long delay. Drink service was also slow, and the “seat yourself” setup made things confusing for a larger group — not ideal for more than four people. We only saw one staff member the entire few hours we were there. Several beers had something floating in them that looked like mold, which was concerning. When the food finally arrived (about an hour later), a few meals were fine, but most were subpar: both kids’ grilled cheeses were burnt, the burger smelled and tasted off, the salmon was cold & tasted funny, and one meal had to be sent back. Even the fish and chips came with just a small stack of fries, which seemed strange. Unfortunately
During a recent weekend getaway, we found this little gem of a restaurant. Nick was the bartender/ waiter and was very attentive and accommodating. Treated us to homemade chips and aioli dip to start. We had the Irish nachos and then a wedge salad for me and the classic smash burger for my husband. He said it was the best smash burger he ever had and really enjoyed the French fries too. Everything seems to be house made. Only disappointment is that they haven’t added any desserts to their menu. Small menu but definitely worth a trip for a weekend dinner.
