Customer Reviews
Tensai is a cozy, small Midtown spot, and reservations are definitely recommended. The decor is warm and inviting, and while we were excited to try some of their Yakiniku dishes — unfortunately, the steak options were already sold out by the time we ordered. We ended up starting with the karaage, followed by a beef udon (ebi niku) and an udon with egg, both served with shrimp tempura. The karaage was the highlight — very well cooked, crisp, and flavorful, with a great spicy mayo on the side. The main dishes, though, were a letdown, especially since they were what we’d come for. The udon noodles were cooked well, but the broth was bland and lazily salted, and it took a while to arrive. The tempura didn’t help much — the batter wasn’t very crisp, and it tasted like it was fried in older oi
Tensai serves delicious Japanese comfort food. The udon was perfectly chewy, the karaage donburi was flavorful and satisfying, and the takoyaki was good. Great food, cozy atmosphere—highly recommended! 🍜🍗✨
Not to sound harsh but I think the other reviews are a bit too generous to this place. The food is just fine - we got the ebi ten udon (order a classic to judge a place) and the yakiniku udon, and a shio saba for appetizer. The saba was seasoned nicely although a bit tough, but the udons were disappointing. The noodles were overcooked and much too soft, they tasted like any mass produced packaged udon you could get at a grocery store. The shrimp tempura weren’t bad though, nice crisp. Service is really nice though, and the ambience is perfectly homey and as good of a Japan-in-America vibe as you could hope for!
this place was so delicious and the service was fantastic! we had 4 appetizers (spiced cucumber, tofu pockets, pork gyoza and fried octopus) and they were all so tasty and fresh. as a main, I had the beef udon noodles and my boyfriend had the fried udon with steak. we both loved everything and our waitress was so friendly and helpful! definitely a spot to come back to <3
As an udon connoisseur, this place is just all right nothing exceptional good experience if you just want some udon and can’t be bothered who serves it to you. Space was very cute although a little small and cramped the table behind me and I were kind of right up against each other. Service was fine nothing wrong with it.
