Sweet Donkey Coffee

Great spot in Roanoke. Always busy but I don’t mind that as much. We love Food Truck and Tunes on Friday nights. Little known fact about Sweet Donkey is that they make the best waffles on the planet. I wish their coffee was better (fresh, single origin….which they have sometimes through Counter Culture)…maybe start brewing a local roaster?

This used to be one of my favorite coffee shops, which is why it honestly makes me sad to write this review. Recently, I visited the café with a friend who had never been there before. I was really excited to show her the place because it has always been special to me. I’ve gone many times and always felt welcomed and comfortable. Sadly, this visit was very different. I checked the hours and saw they close at 7 PM, so we made sure to go early. We arrived around 5:50 PM, almost 6 PM, because we only planned to have a quick coffee and not stay too late. I also work in customer service, so I completely understand how frustrating it can be when people show up right before closing, which is why we made sure to come with plenty of time. I’ve lived in London, New York City, and Los Angeles- this coffee house is my favorite. While visiting my dad in Roanoke for the last two weeks, I’ve spent every morning at this cafe. It is fantastic. The baristas seem chill and friendly. Try a hot latte with orange silk.

If you haven't visited this coffee shop yet, what are you even doing?? This place is the best for just enjoying a drink, inside or outside. I've worked remotely from here as well no problem they have tons of seating upstairs and outside. Sometimes I've seen them have event days where they host some vendors or a food truck. Love love love the Sweet Donkey and will always support them, the staff is always cheerful and so kind and just seem generally happy to be here so I hope they're paid a fair wage.

Looking around for places to go and see and happened upon this location. I had to go just because of the name. The place has 2 floors and fireplaces. We went in for tea because my friend felt a little under the weather. I took my own lemon in and they cut it for me and put honey in the tea. I had a latte, which was delightful. It is a coffee shop I would enjoy working from while enjoying the quaint decor. They staff were fabulous. Very happy I made the time to check it out.
