Customer Reviews
Great place. Has a nice little outdoor museum of older times with wood cabins, fences, and other items. A lovely place. And along with that, there's a beautiful walk by a river and while it's in a forested area, it is right next to a nice big field where you can see elk and other wildlife on occasion. The parking is for $5 for the day and it works throughout the expansive national park or $15 for the week.
We stopped at the Oconaluftee Visitor Center and it ended up being one of the better parts of our Smokies trip. The staff was friendly and actually helpful, not just handing out maps but giving real guidance on what to see and when. The visitor center itself is well kept, with interesting exhibits that explain the history of the area without feeling overwhelming. Outside, the Mountain Farm Museum was a great bonus. Walking through the old buildings gave real perspective on how people lived in the region. The grounds are beautiful and peaceful, and we were lucky enough to see elk grazing nearby, which made the stop even more memorable. Plenty of parking, clean restrooms, and incredible views make this an easy and worthwhile stop. Whether you spend 20 minutes or an hour, it’s a solid intro
It is a great visitor center, the staff was super friendly and the gift shop was reasonably priced (at least for the magnets!). It is also a stop point/ entry point to hike by the river and visit to old village setup behind the center which are both worth visiting. The river hike ends up in Cherokee in case anyone wonders and does not want to make the hike. The center also has beautiful sitting area wrapped all around the center which makes up for a beautiful place to just stop even if you don't want to hike. The two things that are inconvenient are - it gets very crowded, so you might have to wait to get parking. More importantly, the restrooms stink. They were really bad and I wish were maintained better. I get it it touristic area but the smell was just unbearable. It is about 30 minute
Tons of parking and clean restrooms make this a super convenient stop. There are vending machines on-site and a great little gift shop with all kinds of cool national park merchandise. But the real gem is the covered back porch - rocking chairs and benches overlooking the stunning Smoky Mountains. The view is absolutely incredible, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot elk in the nearby field or close to the center. A peaceful, beautiful place to take a break and soak it all in. Highly recommend stopping here!
I enjoyed this visitor center. We were fishing right down the creek from it and stopped to get a souvenir. They have a nice selection of items to choose from. They, also, have a little museum of sorts. We didn’t do any trails or visit the historic buildings, as we had more fishing to do. But, we did see elk there right at dawn and again later in the evening.
