Customer Reviews
The food here was so so good! I love Native American food and this was the best I’ve had. It is cafeteria style so not big on the ambiance but super reasonably priced for amazing food. A review I read recommended plate of colors aka three sides instead of a meal and I got that. It was delicious and cheap. Area for growth woyld be in clarifying how lines work- maybe a sign or something? Turns out the big line at the back was only for specific food venues, which I didn’t want.
I live in the city and would normally not eat at any of the Smithsonian cafes but this one is different. The Mitsitam native food cafe is truly such a gem and I always try to plan to have lunch here if i’m down on this part of the Mall. It blends the educational aspects of the museum into its menu and represents native recipes and foods from various regions. The food is incredibly fresh and there are so many unique recipes that represent different Native cultures. They offer a Federal Employee discount of 10%. Any Feds working nearby should make this a weekly stop. And the views of the outdoor water feature is such a relaxing view to have. Bravo to the Smithsonian for curating such a unique experience! So impressive!
Possibly the best meal in DC. The chicken tostadas with a green sauce were outstanding. The stewed chicken was well seasoned and not overcooked. Also had the Indian fry bread taco which was light, fluffy with good toppings. Huge portions so we’ll likely share one next time.
A pleasant place to get lunch. The side dishes (e.g. wild rice, mushroom, squash salads) are quite good. The fry bread is served as a dessert, which, while not authentic at all, is still delicious.
Highly recommend trying the fry bread taco! There is a vegetarian option. Absolutely delicious and flavourful. The staff here are also so wonderful and kind
