Merendero Las Catrachitas

Wonderful new find. Honduran food served in a home style environment. The food tasted fresh and was cooked to order. The flavors were incredible! Different from other central and South America restaurants I have sampled. I plan on returning.

Today I drove down South Kingshighway to try a restaurant recommended by one of the talented ladies at Sonder Lush Nail Salon. She told me her favorite menu item was Honduran Fried Chicken. I just had to go and find out for myself what made Honduran Fried Chicken so special. I arrived at exactly 12:00 pm and the lady behind the counter smiled at me, held up one finger…the one that means "just minute" and continued taking an order by phone. The smell of the food had my stomach putting on makeup and eyelashes…we were about to throw down! I chatted with a gentleman that was picking up food for his entire crew (it had to be about 20-30 to go containers). Authentic Honduran restaurant. Very casual and small. Spanish television on with soccer games. Friendly service. Huge portions!!! If you want tamales, go early. They sell out.

Incredible meal. We feasted like kings, for a pittance. Thank you for satisfying my pupusa craving, with plantains to boot.

Ok, I have been in STL for more than three years. I was born and raised in Honduras. Prior to visiting this restaurant I had been in another Honduran restaurant and I was very disappointed; food and ambience. Well, Merendero Las Catrachitas took me back in time to my early years of my life back in Honduras. The food was very delicious and fresh. The ambience was welcoming. I had the Carne azada and it was great. If you don't know much about Honduran food know this; it is not Mexican, Puerto Rican or Dominican food. It is not spicy but it is very tasty.
