Mamak House

Malaysian food in the Tri-State area is rarer than a sixth-floor apartment that's not a walk-up, so I really wanted to like Mamak. It has ample parking and tons of seating--but sadly, the food was uneven at best. We got: - Roti Telur: This was decent but could've had more green chilies. Despite dining with a Malaysian, I think we were served the roti at Western spicy levels. - Mamak Udang Mee Noodle Soup: Not bad. Could've used more shrimp, but there's never enough shrimp in these things. - Nasi Lemak: Bland. Greasy. Sigh-inducing. - Tofu Nyonya with Vegetable: Deep-fried bean curd chunks stir-fried with vegetables and red peppers. The menu said there'd be basil, but there was no basil. Mamak House was a great surprise. The char kway teow has the strongest wok hei I’ve tasted in New Jersey — smoky, flavorful, and cooked hot. The seafood was fresh, especially the shrimp. The fried chicken wings were thin, crispy, and had that old-school Chinese style I really like. The salted fish eggplant claypot is bold and salty, with big chunks of salted fish. Alone they’re strong, but mixed with the eggplant and sauce, the flavor comes together really well. Overall, strong flavors, fresh ingredients, and excellent wok hei. I’d come back just for the char kway teow.

7/10 Roti Canai 3/10 Pi Pa Duck Roti Canai was great but the curry that came with it was room temperature, im not sure if thats normally how it comes. The Pi Pa Duck was not it for me. The duck tasted metallic, ozonic, and slightly bloody, so after 3 bites i didn't finish it. The duck wasn't cleaned well so there was still hair on it. I can normally ignore a couple of feathers left but it was a noticeable cluster of it. Staff was great and attentive!

This restaurant is one of the best restaurants I’ve ever booked at for a large party. They were very accommodating and pleasant. All of my guest were extremely happy with the service and the food was amazing. The waiters didn’t even show any type of dissatisfaction even knowing that the restaurant is about to close, they didn’t rush us and we enjoyed the whole night.

Good menu.. if u craving for malaysian food around Jersey city or Bayonne.. this spot will give u decent satisfaction.. mango sticky rice was not bad but would have been better if sweeter mango
