This park owes its name to a hotel that once sat here. It was originally named The Painter Hotel, located on the northwest corner of Fair Oaks Ave and Washington St. It opened in February 1888, built and managed by Altadena's Painter family. It was popular with tourists from the East Coast, who wintered in the Los Angeles area. It was subsequently called La Pintoresca Hotel; it was last known as Hotel Pasadena, when it burned down on the evening of December 31, 1912. The library that now sits on the former hotel property, the La Pintoresca Branch, was built in 1930.
