Phenomenal! Authentic Scandinavian spot with traditional Swedish and Nordic pastries, dishes and fika style treats and coffee. Couldn’t be happier to discover this place. Pastries were fresh, handmade not overly sweet. Coffee was third wave SF standard and the smoked trout bowl was incredibly healthy and tasty.
My Norwegian teacher recommended this as a place to try out some true Nordic pastries. It was phenomenal. We loved the danish, morning bun, poppy seed covered croissant, cardamom bun and the chocolate covered chocolate mousse. The strawberry lemonade was also excellent. We sat outside with the dog on a warm day and they kindly brought extra stools to seat all of us.
Kantine is the only authentic, truly Scandinavian place in the entire Bay area. Amazing, healthy and tasty food! Love their pastries as well as their sandwiches. The interiors follows the typical Scandinavian style. Day specials are sold out quickly. You cannot book a table but waiting in line is always worted! Prices aligned with the typical ones in the bay area. They are the best!
Kantine serves delicious Scandinavian food. They have a wide selection of great-tasting healthy options (sweet porridge, salty porridge, hot smoked trout bowls, seasonal sandwiches) and less healthy but equally delicious pastries. Coffee is ok, the interior is cute as well.
One word: semla Kantine’s seasonal semla is my favorite pastry in SF! I make it a point to visit when it’s available for a very short time before the Lenten season when it’s traditionally served. It has a delicious almond paste and whipped cream and is truly delightful. Other items like the breakfast sandwich, cardamom knot, and cardamom latte are excellent. I haven’t made my way through the entire menu but hope to try the savory porridge, breakfast plate, and other pastries soon. The space is beautiful and the counter seating can get sun drenched and quite warm. I’m inspired to visit Scandinavian countries one day to get a taste of what Kantine does so well!
