Jimmy Jack's Rib Shack BBQ

We came and ordered two “meals” both ordered cornbread. About 10 minutes of waiting the guy comes out and says they only have 1 piece of cornbread left and they can swap one out for a different side. Very disappointing but I chose a different side. We get our food and about 10 minutes later they are bringing people out cornbread. There was no do you want to wait for cornbread it was just we only have one piece left. The food was delicious but after that I probably won’t come back. The coleslaw has no flavor.

Staff is fun and attentive. Food was excellent. Half smoked chicken with double fries as my side, so I can enjoy the great sauces they offer. Mom got the five piece smoked wings with excellent cornbread and beans for her sides. Very delicious.

Superb quality restaurant food in a casual, welcoming setting, a vital element of the Iowa City area dining landscape. Can confirm the brisket, wings and burger are all in the top tier of Johnson County offerings. The rotating sauces and sandwiches keep it interesting (although being able to get the Apple BBQ sauce year round would be nice) and the staff is always nice when you walk in and step up to the counter. I’ve heard from lots of folks involved with Hawkeye athletics that Jimmy Jacks is the preferred favorite for catered meals for many of the teams and it makes sense- it’s tasty but it’s never too salty or over-seasoned, filling but doesn’t leave you sapped. Plus it’s local and the owners have done a lot for the community over the decades. Highly recommend!

Absolutely delicious ribs, which had a ton of fall-off-the-bone meat. My main complaint was that the meat was a bit dry, but their great house barbecue sauce was a great remedy. They also had a pickle bar.
