We loved it here. Really depends on what you are looking for, and this was perfect for us. Had the whole place and surrounding hills to ourselves for 4 days, zero other people around. It's a very relaxing place with a couple of short day hikes within easy reach. Nice fire pit and bear box, too.
My young kids, some good friends and I hiked to Hockett Meadows from Atwell. As we approached the ranger station in Hockett Meadows, Ranger Cody came out to meet us. He was pleasant, informative and just a welcoming person to what he repeatedly referred to as OUR national forrest. We need more Codys in the world. And we need to preserve more places like Hockett Meadows and Sequoia National Forrest, or at least increase the funding to keep the ones we have in such wonderful repair.
Long trail but worth hiking. Early season will encounter lots of mosquitoes need lots of eucalyptus spray...
Terrible experience. Nothing to do there. Not even any mountains, its just trees and grass. Save your time and do the high Sierra trail.
