Fred's Downtown Philly

Fred’s Downtown Philly makes one of the best cheesesteaks I’ve had, hands down. The steak is chopped perfectly — tender, juicy, and packed with flavor — not dry, not greasy, just right. Every bite is loaded with well-seasoned meat that tastes like it’s been cooked fresh to order. The cheese melts all the way through instead of just sitting on top, coating the steak so you get that rich, creamy bite every single time. The roll deserves its own praise too — soft enough to soak up all the flavor, but sturdy enough to hold everything together without falling apart halfway through. Nothing feels skimpy or rushed. It’s hot, messy in the best way, and completely satisfying from the first bite to the last. If you’re getting a cheesesteak, Fred’s absolutely needs to be on your list.

I have eaten here many times and have had no major issues before but on 1/10/26 when I ordered my usual #2 with no onions (on the left) I got home to discover that it had been made on, what appears to be, a hot dog bun? Like if you had run out your usual bread, that’s fine, you can tell me that when I come to pick up my order. What you should not have done is charge me the same as a full size sandwich when this is definitely not a full size sandwich, and certainly not the full size sandwich amount of meat and cheese so you scammed me out of my hard earned money. If I had never been ordered here before or just ordered this sandwich alone, you might have been able to pull one over on me. Funny to give atmosphere column 5 stars...but we're loving this small, homey atmosphere and who we met there. That's what "atmosphere" IS, isn't it??? First time (hopefully of many) there at Fred's. We went because it's close to the farm museum...but now will repeatedly return for the food, the atmosphere, and for Fred, himself. People we met there for the first time said they'd researched fully bc they're FROM Philly and wanted the real thing. The couple we went with and I, myself, did the cheesesteak variety, but I had a bite of the hamburger? It was an OMG...and do get the soft inside, crunchy outside waffle sweet potato fries, which are slightly powered sugared. It was borderline kinky, how we enjoyed them! My first visit to Fred's will forever be a memorable one. I came from Oklahoma to visit friends and attend a Cowboy's game. The friends knew my love for sandwiches and suggested Fred's. We placed our to-go order and sent me in, all decked out in Cowboy's gear, only to be sent out while barely entering. At the window, my friends hysterically laughing as they knew Fred was deeply rooted in Philly. The sandwich is the best I have ever had, and 15 years later, Fred always shakes my hand on every visit I see him. Straight-forward, no nonsense, one of a kind guy with amazing food that cannot be found at any corporate establishment. Thank you Fred... you are the best the Dallas area has to offer!

Ordered the cheesesteaks #2, mushrooms#8 and the hoagie #7 for my wife's birthday celebration. Communication with the staff to make and confirm the order was very friendly and professional. Shavone(forgive if misspelled) was exceptional. She made sure all the details of my order was handled properly because my wife is one of dem ones. Delivery was right on time and I quite pleasantly surprised by the driver. Food was hot and that jawn was good enough to bring da water works. Fred's Downtown Philly never disappoints.
