Doro Soul Food

Went on a Saturday night after deciding we didn’t want to wait in line at the Pizza place around the corner. We had no idea what to expect but it looked interesting so gave it a shot and we’re very surprised to find three restaurants in one (Burgers, Mexican-Ethiopian fusion, and Soul chicken) I was originally to try the soul chicken, but I changed my mind and tried the Mex-Ethiopian fusion since I’m Mexican and my husband got a burger and fries. Well, I was very pleasantly surprised with my unique tacos and guac, and the burger was crazy filling. Those fries were pretty good too. Now I’m excited to go back and try the soul chicken too. The service was also welcoming, music good, volume perfect, and food came out quite fast.

I had a good time at Doro Soul Restaurant: Honestly, I would have rated everything 5/5 if it weren’t for the buttery taste in the chicken. I wish the chef offered an option to choose between oil or butter for the chicken marinade. The flavor was a bit too heavy for me and my husband. That said, I think it’s an acquired taste, so everyone should try it for themselves.

What a unique concept that's executed perfectly! A takeout spot through a small window just north of U Street NW, Doro Soul Food takes some classic favorite dishes like fried chicken and mac and cheese and adds a Ethiopian twist. I ordered the chicken tenders and they were perfectly fried. The breading is full of flavor and crispy while the meat remained juicy. So good! The mac and cheese was very, very good too. It may be my favorite in the city. If you need comfort food with Ethiopian spices, go here!

Fantastic experience. It can be a challenge finding parking but the trip is worth it. There’s a wonderful atmosphere with very friendly and helpful staff, and the food is fantastic. Everything we had was delicious. My wife and I had the alicha char-grilled Doro plate, turmeric Cole slaw, collard greens (best I’ve ever had), sweet potato fries, berbere fries, and a goden taco. I would say even if you are a big meat eater, the goden taco is a MUST HAVE. For a veggie taco the flavors were spot on. Down is definitely a keeper! Probably the only downside is parking can be difficult, street parking in DC. But go for it.

I found out about Doro Soul Food from YouTube and had to check it out during a recent visit to Washington DC. I got two different fried chicken plates (mild spice level), coleslaw and fries. The fried chicken was really good, well seasoned and very moist. The fries were also well-seasoned but I expected a bigger portion size. The coleslaw was not great, it wasn’t flavorful and tasted bland. The chicken plates came with a biscuit muffin but I thought it tasted bland and stale. So I would recommend Doro Soul Food primarily for the fried chicken and the quick service.
